Ohhh Point Eight!

BizDir_0_8We’re There!
Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions, support, and patience.

We are proud to release Business Directory for WordPress v0.8 Beta. It has been submitted to the gods at WordPress and should appear in your auto-update soon. In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown on what you will see, namely: Categories!

New in This Version

  1. Added Categories: you can now create your own categories, assign listings to categories, sign up into a category, and search by category.
  2. Fixed Bugs: We fixed a few issues that were troubling some of you, and found a few items that we improved under the hood.

This version is a little more stable, and sets the stage for future development of some nifty features that will let you take advantage of categories.

Upgrading Instructions For Current Users

  1. Back up your database.
  2. Seriously; while we are pretty confident in our stuff, we don’t want to be responsible for ruining yours. Back that thing up.
  3. Deactivate your current version of BizDir from within your Plugins Admin.
  4. Upload or Auto-update the new version 0.8 Beta.
  5. Reactivate BizDir.
  6. Add categories, assign categories, tell all your friends.
  7. Seriously; tell all your friends.

New users can simply add the new plugin as you normally would, though we still recommend the back up.

Here are some screen shots for you…

BizDir_2

^On your Business Directory page you will now have the ability to search for categories. This is a great feature for now, and sets up the ability in future versions to create separate pages in your blog for each category. Stay tuned…

BizDir_3

^In your Sign Up page you will notice a new field for Category. Your visitors are required to select a category before their submission will be accepted. This assures that all new sign ups are assigned to a category. You can name your own categories in the BizDir Admin panel.

BizDir_1

^In your BizDir admin panel, you can assign or change categories for your users before or after you approve them.

BizDir_4

^In the BizDir admin panel you now have the ability to add as many categories as you want. We create a category called ‘General’ for you, and assign all your existing listings into that category when you upgrade or install this new version. You have the ability to change the name of the General category, or can delete it. Note that your visitors will not be able to submit a listing unless there is a category for them to choose, so make sure you always have a category in there.

WARNING: Deleting a category will ALSO delete all the listings in that category. We warn you about this before we allow you to go through with it, but it is a good think to think about before you go deleting all your categories and flush your listings along with them. To avoid this, simply re-assign all the listings in a particular category to a new category. We’ll tell you how many listings are left in a category before you delete it, so you can be assured that you have cleared everyone out.

Did I mention backing up your database before doing any of this is a good idea?

:-)

Quick Update: A Little More Testing…

finishlineWe almost made it tonight. I am pleased to announce we have a working copy. However because of the lateness of our day, we want to ‘sleep on it’ one more time, do some additional testing for a short while in the morning, and then post.

We are planning to post before noon, Tomorrow. I’ll let you know if we have to change this, but I am pretty confident we are ‘there’.

We are being a little overly concerned about this particular update because we are adding some new database components and we need to make sure things are stable before we release this to the wild.

While are are pretty pleased with the stability, we will request that you BACKUP YOUR DATABASE BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW VERSION. Just in case. Most of you will want to use PHPMyAdmin to do the backup. See these instructions on how to back up your database.

See you tomorrow!

Wait For It…

We are within hours of posting the new version with categories. I hope we do not disappoint!

countdownA quick note before we do: Some of you are having problems with the display, and a few are having problems with the forms not working. We are working on some bugs that may fix this for future installations. However, if you are currently having trouble with the plugin, you may want to try this:

  1. Back up your database
  2. Back up the ‘wp_biz_listings’ table, separately
  3. Deactivate the Business Directory plugin
  4. Delete the ‘wp_biz_listings’ table, specifically
  5. Reactivate the Business Directory plugin
  6. Import the wp_biz_listings’ info from your backup

This should get you up and running again. Note two things:

  1. Our objective here is to delete the specific BizDir database table, and then to restore it. Backing up your data will allow you to try this without loosing your current listings. However, if you have been unable to create any listings, the backing up in step two is not necessary. We do want you to backup your entire database, however, just to be safe.
  2. If you are an advanced user, you may have changed the name of the table. ‘wp’ is the default prefix for WordPress, and the table we want to work with should be named with this prefix. But it might not be. This will likely only effect those of you who like to tinker with this stuff, and you already know this.

We are working out a few last bugs and testing, and have decided to add a necessary feature that requires you to delete or change your listings in a particular category before it lets you delete the category (just to be safe). We should be seeing this live in a few hours.

Coming Around

atthebeachSorry for the delays, everyone. We have been pretty busy and the summer has taken it’s toll.

We have developed a new version that includes the ability to add categories to your Directory. We have a few finishing touches to perform before we post it, and need to test for the latest version of WordPress. We hope to have this up by the end of August. We’re trying to catch up; sorry again for the lack of communication and silence.

Thanks for all the great comments, suggestions and ideas.

New Version Uploaded: 0.7.1 Beta

071We just posted a new version of the Business Directory for WordPress plugin: Meet v0.7.1 Beta!

This new version fixes a bug in the installation process that was causing an error in the database creation process. The restulting functional error was that you could not save a Directory Listing to the database.

In this new version, we are correctly installing the database, and updating items upon activation.

The new version is available for download from the WordPress plugin directory (for newcomers, click in the upper right of this page) and via your plugin auto update in your WordPress plugin admin panel.

We are planning to jump from ‘beta’ to a ‘release’ version in our next revision. Functionally this does not mean much more than ‘we think we have the bugs worked out’. Our Big Kahuna pro version update is still in the mill, and we hope to have something out on the streets by Spring. …of 2009.

Thanks for being with us. Let us know how it goes.

Taking A Break

santabreakI’d like to take a moment to thank you all for your support, feedback, and suggestions.

We have a good list of ideas to work with and are planning to get back to it after we take a little time off for Christmas, New Year’s, Family, and a little catch up time to wrap up our fiscal year and to prepare for our 2009 business year.

We are excited to get the new version wrapped up, and will be getting back to things as soon as we can.

In the meantime, we will continue to appreciate your comments and support, and ask for your understanding during the next month or so as we turn our attention away from BizDir for just a little while to catch up on our other obligations.

We wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and success for us all; Everyone!

Updated: v0.7 Beta Released, Interface Improvements

07betaThough not a major release, and nothing really that Earth-shattering, we have managed to push out another release with some minor interface changes. Here’s the quick list:

  • We updated the navigation for WP 2.7. If you don’t have 2.7 yet, it is a must-have.
  • We added a footer pagination navigation so that you don’t have to scroll back up to go to the next page.
  • We also added a note on the Join Form that reminds your visitors that they need to provide at least one form of contact information.

We’ll be working on things over the holidays, and plan to have more for you early next year. Thanks for all the terrific comments and great feedback.

Uses for Business Directory

We have received a number of comments from people wondering if this is strictly a ‘business’ tool.

The answer is ‘No’.

Business Directory for WordPress can be used for any yellow-pages style directory. Here are a few examples and suggestions. If you are a web developer, these might help you make suggestions for your clients. If you know of someone who fits one of these categories, please tell them about our plugin. If you have a suggestion, add it to the comments.

Business Directory: Of course this can be used as a directory of business that belong to a region, or a vertical market. For instance, Utah Valley Business Blog uses the plugin to invite Utah Valley businesses to participate in their listing. You could easily use this plugin to build a directory of ‘Florida Companies’ or ‘Fence Companies’ or ‘Great places to find arts and crafts’, depending on your blog subject.

Membership: You might use this plugin to create an online list of your group membership. For instance ‘all the companies that belong to the Save The Belltower organization’, or for a local Chamber of Commerce.

Groups: This plugin makes a great way to enable the members of your group to pitch their business or affiliation. For instance a local Kiwanis group or a local BNI group. Groups can also be temporary such as ‘participating groups’ for a local event or sponsorship.

Church Groups: We have actually heard from some church groups using the Business Directory for WordPress plugin to enable their local church membership to post their businesses. This is a great way to support your local economy and help promote the members of your local church.

Sponsorships: This is also a great way to gain and post sponsorships. As you approach companies for a sponsorship, you can add them to the directory.

Clubs: A presence in the ‘club’ business directory can be presented as a major perk for participation. For example, everyone in our cycling club gets to post their business in our club business directory.

Affiliations: The listings don’t always have to be business oriented; you could, for example, list affiliate clubs, organizations or businesses. If you happen to be a Bike Shop, you could easily list all the local affiliate bike clubs.

MLMs: We have seen a few Multi-level Marketing organizations use the plugin to list all the members of a ‘downline’. This effectively increases search engine optimization and helps raise the attention given to the members of a specific group.

Any other ideas? Let us know in the comments! And please pass the word along to anyone you can think of who might be interested in using our plugin. Thanks!

Submit Button Woes

We discovered that in some installations of Business Directory for WordPress the Submit button on the Join Form was inactive. This was preventing some users from submitting listings.

Although we haven’t been able to replicated this error on our own servers yet, we believe the error is due to a javascript error. Unfortunately, it appears that this javascript error is not our fault (If it were, we would fix it), but rather the result of incompatibility issues with other javascript scripts from other plugins, custom hacks, or themes.

For now; we have updated Business Directory so that the submit button is not dependent on javascript to function properly. If you have been experiencing this error, download Business Directory again and reinstall it.

We have uploaded a quiet update as of October 13 at about Noon.

Details about the update: We have inserted a small bit of code that allows the Submit button to function even if there is a conflict with another javascript (such as, we think, Google Adwords). Users experiencing a conflict will not get the auto-populated instructions in each of the entry fields of the Add Form, but the Join button will still work. Users with no conflict will experience things as normal.

We have a plan for a more robust fix in future versions.

Updated: v0.6.1 Beta Released, ‘Internet Explorer 7’ bug fixes

After receiving considerable feedback regarding an error when submitting listings from Internet Explorer 7, we have thrown in a little more elbow grease, and burned some midnight oil to release Business Directory for WordPress v0.6.1 Beta

Please upgrade immediately to this latest version; this will solve a lot of issues for you as your readers try to upload their entries onto your site Directory.

We did additional testing specifically for Internet Explorer 7 and fixed the following bugs:

  • The Search function on the Directory page was exhibiting unstable behavior. We believe that we found and eradicated this problem. Let us know if you still have trouble searching the Directory.
  • The Join Form was not submitting properly, this has been fixed.

I am probably speaking to the choir here, but we like to recommend FireFox for the best experience.

>>>By the way; if you have version 0.6 installed, this update notice will appear in your plugins directory.
