New Version Released: v0.8.5beta

We released a new version of our Business Directory for WordPress plugin today. We are at v0.8.5beta.

We imagine Apple’s embarrassment as they realized they timed their announcement of the iPad on the same day as ours. Oh well; you can’t win ‘em all.

Anyway, this is a fairly minor update, but may fix a few known issues.

In particular, we have increased our URL handling, made Business Directory compatible with WordPress MU, and fixed a compatibility issue with our own FAQ Builder.

We are not completely certain, but these simple fixes may cascade their compatibility-goodness to other plugins that may not be friendly toward us (or visa-versa, but we’re not about to admit that in public). In other words; this simple update may help in other areas, too.

In any case, this new version is an improvement in a few areas, and a rewrite of several code elements should go a long ways to make things better, today and in the future as we continue to make improvements.

Thanks for your support and we’ll appreciate any tell-a-friends, re-tweets, or social mentions.

I have been waiting for and upgrade for a long time.. Hope to have an image upload button on the form so that the listing could be linked to a photo.

    Thanks for the update

    I found an issue in the function.php on line #254;

    $directory .= ““.@$l["company_email"].”“;

    should be

    $directory .= ““.@$l["company_email"].”“;

    I hopes this helps!

Thank you, your plugin is just what I am looking for to develop a members directory for a not for profit assoc website I am working on. My only drawback is they have a logo next to their business. Is the premium version going to have the ability to have a logo and if so, when do you hope to have it ready?

    Hey there,
Love the plugin. It is awesome and very handy. One question. Is there a way to have the plugin email the admin (or some email address) when a new business is submitted? Other than that, I can’t see anything that would make this plugin better. You seem to have thought of everything!
    Thanks.

Any updates regarding featured listings with payment as well as support for sub categories? Would also like to know if you are working on the functionality to allow for “more details” pages for each business listing. Lastly, ability to add a logo/picture would be amazing. Please email me if you would like to discuss this in detail.

    thanks,

I am recieving the same AJAX error as the guy who posted above. The funny thing is that my database still functions, but i have to click ok to an AJAX error from my browser every time i do anything on the database. I tried it in 3 different browsers, Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome, all of which are the latest versions and got the same error. please help!

  10. Posted February 2, 2010 at 12:29 am | Permalink

I too am getting this error.

Also receiving it when hitting submit on new entries. The entry does submit, but the error is there.

Of note: it occurs in both firefox and safari, no idea about ie. Forgot to check (not able to now).

When selecting a category, if the category has content, it will load it, but it will NOT finish reloading the rest of the entire site which comes after that point.

Hope you get it fixed soon, fantastic script otherwise. Looking forward to the subscriptions too.

Also, I’ve noticed the same issue regarding incomplete page load. This time it happens on the listing page once it has listings.

Great plugin. For some reason, our description is still active, but the phone number and other contact info has disappeared… any thoughts as to where to look to solve this issue? Thanks! We are at the latest versions of both your plug in and WP.

I am seeing the same AJAX errors when you submit a listing and when you choose a category to view listings. We run the latest version of WP. Any ideas why its doing that?

I’ve just tried your plug-in on my test site and a *really* like it.

There are one or two really minor reasons that I can’t use it, and one or two fairly minor upgrades that I think would work (and that I bet you could do a paid-for plug in to support.

    They are….

    1. If you aren’t in the US, ‘Zip Codes’ scream ‘this is a standard piece of software’ (there are a few other minor things that look v US-centric as well)- if we could define the names of the fields, it would be very good.

    2. Allowing people to add multiple contacts per entry it would be good. Also having some kind of email verification would be great. Allowing people to upload logos and personal pictures would be fantastic.

    3. I really like the ‘free listing / pay for premium’ (logo, longer description etc).

That’s just a quick bit of feedback. I love the idea, and I suspect that I’ll be deploying your next version if it includes a few minor changes. But I bet there’s a market of people who’d pay for a more featured plugin like this?

The page is not showing correctly how do I know if I have pluginstaller in my version of WP 2.9.1 ? And if I do how do I turn it off ? I think it is a great plugin hope to use it soon as possible.

    Thank you

I have installed your directory on wp 2.9.1 and the directory is not showing correctly. I don’t think it has pluginstaller in 2.9.1 so I don’t think that is the issue. Can you advise me as to what the problem may be ?

    Thank you

I’ve added your directory to a website and its working really well, however I would like to have the option to display the address in the listings. How can I achieve this?

  18. Posted February 26, 2010 at 4:57 pm | Permalink

    Hi,
Real excited for this plug-in. It was mentioned in the forums at wpmudev.org and those guys are pretty smart!
Unfortunately, when I hit the “Submit listing” button in either Firefox or IE, I get the green “Submitting Form, Please Wait” and then nothing happens…

I’m actually using Bluehost, your preferred provider. Perhaps my theme has some conflicting javascript or something? I know I have some other plugins in there but I don’t want to disable any since they are critical. Any suggestions for troubleshooting this?

Whoops – forgot to mention the page I’m using to submit forms:

    Thanks for any suggestions

I love the plugin, but I’m having an issue with output appearance and can’t locate where the conflict is. I have tried the directory on two sites I am working on, and for one it shows up fine, but on the other the listing name and description show up, but none of the contact information (url, email, and phone) show up. I have tried it with several themes to the same results. I also have disabled all other plugins to see if there was a conflict and none of them seemed to be causing the issue.

We are making over our external web site from its ugly Web 1.0 world that is currently “live”, to a spiffy Web 2.0 version that is currently hosted on an internal server, so I can’t show it to you as yet. But, we’re using a Gabfires Theme we’ve customized, along with your Business Directory plug-in. Brilliant…on our test site it works GREAT. Love it. However, we will be one of the first to sign up for a Premium Version that will allow a PayPal pay wall, logo/pic inclusion, sub-category listings, etc. We are ChurchExecutive Magazine in Phoenix, and we are also throwing out and re-doing our other two web sites for two other brands we own in the publishing/digital worlds. Each of these will need a Business Directory premium product as well. I hope you can deliver this FAST :-) Any idea when that will be???

    Hi

How would I get the directory to show all info entered, i.e. address, city, phone numbers, etc …

Right now, it only shows the business name, URL, and description.

    Thank you.

Like this idea and would also pay for a premium version. Is anyone else having problems with the categories? I made my own categories and removed the “General” category. Since I have done this, I get a new “General” category added everyday. And if I don’t check on it for a week, then I have seven new “General” categories that I have to delete. A real pain! Is there something in the program that requires a “General” category causing this?

Here is an additions that I feel would make this plugin it even better.

You should be able to choose what Information is shown on the list page. For example I would find it really helpful for my site users if they could see the address displayed so they can see if that company or service is in there area.

Good day! I have used your awesome plugin in building a database of non-government organizations’s directory under the National Council on Disability Affairs Official Website. May I ask if is there a way to fix the codes in such a way that it will pass the XHTML 1.0 strict validation? The site does not have any problem with other codes except the script from the Business Directory.

    Here is the site: http://www.ncda.gov.ph
Here is the HTML Validation Result:
    http://www.htmlhelp.com/cgi-bin/validate.cgi?url=http://www.ncda.gov.ph&url1=http://www.ncda.gov.ph/2010/announcements/cbr-ap-networks-logo-designing-contest

I googled from dynamicdrive.com. They suggested that I add this

    //

to the script to validate it. But I don’t know where to find it. Kindly help. Thanks :-)

Oops, the javascript code did not appear. The link where I got the suggestion is this:

I’ve got the same issue as some of the other posters – the directory only shows the business name and description, but none of the other stuff.

Really nice plugin though – have made a donation, and would be interested in your planned premium version.

    2 suggestions for improvements:

    1) Have the ability to change the labels on the submission form – as I live in the UK, I’d like to be able to change the “Zip code” to “Postcode” for example.

    2) Have an automatic email sent to the administrator whenever a new listing had been added.

Look forward to your next version – keep up the good work!

  32. Posted March 28, 2010 at 3:06 pm | Permalink

Would like to see the ability to add directory listings from the admin side… would volunteer my (wife’s) site for testing, if still needed.

  33. Posted March 31, 2010 at 9:47 am | Permalink

The issue people are having with phone numbers and other contacts not showing is a BUG in the way the fields are referenced.

The 0.8.5beta is using $l->company_url format which is not correct as the $l is an array, not an object.

$l["company_url"] is the correct format. Lines 251 – 256 of Functions.php is where this code needs to be changed.

  34. Posted April 5, 2010 at 10:39 am | Permalink

I cannot get this plugin to activate on WP 2.9.2 MU.

It gives the following error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user() in /path_to/my_site/public_html/wp-includes/capabilities.php on line 969

  35. Posted April 9, 2010 at 1:24 pm | Permalink

I am also having a problem with the business dirctory not showing contact info (phone number, location). It only shows the URL and description.

  36. Posted April 19, 2010 at 8:05 am | Permalink

Same prob as Cyberfarer and Tim. What for do I need the geographical information when they are not shown at the end?

Would like to donate for the plugin, but then I would like to get a working one, anyways.

    Thanks for getting back quickly.

I just upgraded biz dir and I noticed that listings no longer show phone number…. Is this intentional or could there be a problem with the plugin or with wp? I’m still running WP 2.7 — I’m having issues upgrading to the latest version, so I admit that could be a problem – I just wanted to know if the phone numbers were taken out of the listings…

    thanks!

Maybe I’m missing something, but wouldn’t it be a good option to be able to point to a static URL – ideally I suppose a WP page – which listed an entire category? That way it would be possible to make sure it was SEO-friendly – I’m not sure whether the categories of a particular directory would be found particularly easily, even if people were making a pretty narrow search, but as I say I might be missing something.

also anyone know how to change the font like on the example directory in the documentation?
