Call For Help: Are You Having Trouble?

In an effort to make some sweeping improvements to the BizDir plugin, we are looking for a handful of sites that we can work with for testing. We would like to see a range of different hosting environments and options, and our own testing lab is simply too limited to provide what we need.

If you are willing to let us root around your site for a few hours, please send us a note using our Contact Form by the end of the day on Monday, March 8, 2010.

(NOTE: Please Do not send usernames and passwords in this initial response; we’ll get in touch with you to make the exchange.)

Here are the details:

  1. We need FTP access – username and password. If you can’t provide this, we understand; please do not apply.
  2. We also need access to your database. This will require username and password access to your server or Control Panel (PHPMyAdmin).
  3. You must be running the latest version of WordPress.
  4. You must be running PHP5
  5. You must have Business Directory installed and active on a live public page.
  6. You must backup your site files and database prior to our testing.
  7. You must understand that we will be working on your site, and thus it may go down (up to 48 hours). We will do our best to prevent the site from going down for an extended period of time.
  8. You must agree not to change the structure of the site (by adding plugins or changing a theme, etc.) while we are looking at it. Adding posts is not a problem.

We will:

  1. We will test your site for a maximum ‘testing period’ of 48 hours.
  2. We will keep your access information safe and secure. We will uphold your privacy and will not share any details of your site files, structure, etc. with anyone outside our testing process.
    1. We will delete our access information at the end of our testing and will not revisit the site after the testing period without your written permission.
  3. We will do everything in our means to keep your site up and alive, however you must understand that your site may go down for a brief period during any point during the testing period (48-hours). We don’t anticipate that it will go down at all, but it could.
  4. We will work to fix the problem on your site. We do not guarantee a fix, but it is our intent to do so.
  5. We will not charge you (of course, but I knew it had to be said).
  6. We will select a small handful of candidate sites and then respond to you. Please don’t take it ‘personal’ if we don’t select you.
  7. We will build any solutions we find into a new version of BizDir and post it for everyone to enjoy.

Submission Deadline: Let us know by the end of the day on Monday, March 8, 2010.

It sounds like you guys are busy at it, so you may not have a chance to answer this question…

I’ve tried a few different modifications to make this happen but none seem to work.

Any idea on how to make the initial landing page not show ANY listings at all until someone either enters a search term or chooses a category?

I cannot get your contact form to work on any of my browsers.

    http://businessdirectory.squarecompass.com/contact-us/

After you hit send, it says in green “Submitting Message, Please Wait…”

    and then hangs up.

Hi, just playing with the directory. Very nice! If I end up using it I will be making a donation.

One question – Is there any way of formatting the Org. Description field so that we can make some words bold, use lists or HTML?

Anyway, keep up the great work.

Hey guys, great plugin. I have changed some parts of the plugin, well not changed but added another short code to list all the categories and list listingins within a category id, if you require it let me know I will send over the files. Thanks.

I have been fruitlessly looking for such a plug-in to run a community site and would gladly pay for this if I could get it to display the information that it so wonderfully collects. If you have any thoughts or are still looking for sites to use as test sites I would be happy to volunteer.

    Best,

Does the Business Directory for WordPress require (or create) a web.config file in the database root to operate?
If so what should the content of that file be? I keep having blank web.config text documents appear in my database and they prevent the site from being viewd through a browser – until the web.config is deleted.
    Any help on this?

As far as I know mynewblog.com has been powered by WordPress, and for some reason my blog casslam.mynewblog.com vanished overnight without any prior notice and can no longer be found online. WordPress owes me an explanation! I need to have my blog back!

Hi guys I did e-mail but have now found my way to the blog – very new to this.
I have succesfully installed the plugin it was really easy to do, I am loading the directory information but for some reason, although the business name and description are displayed, none of the contact information is and I do not know how I can rectify this.
I would be very grateful for any pointers.
    Thank you

    Hey, guys:
Great tool but there is a critical issue with the final listings…once it’s posted listings are not showing any fields except the organization name and description.

We need for all of the contact fields to show…

Hey guys, great plugin, but I’m having an issue with the listings. It’s only showing the name and description, but nothing else. The one listing I have that has a link to a website seems to be linking properly, but there’s no other contact information or category information listed. From the screenshots, it looks as though at least the telephone number should be showing. I read the FAQ about holding back addresses, but in order for the business listings to really serve any purpose, potential customers *REALLY* need to be able to get to this data.

In our case, we’re switching over from another site to a WordPress site, and so we’ve already got a set of paid business listings that we’re transferring over. In that system, all the information is visible, so it’s kind of a shock to find that I don’t have more control over what shows in the final listing. For now, I’m going to place the info in the description, but I would love to see an update soon that allows this content to be visible.

If you really want to give site owners the ability to charge for better listings, I’d seriously consider adding a function to the plugin that allows the administrators to choose what’s visible and what’s not. That way those who want to provide free listings can do so without having to sacrifice vital information.

Okay with the help of this hack, I was able to get the data fields I needed to show up: http://gist.github.com/281865

This hack was originally posted here: http://businessdirectory.squarecompass.com/2010/evolution-took-time-too/#comment-565

It’s important to note that I had to remove { and } before the first $directory .= “”; and after the last $directory .= “”; to make the code work. After that, I was able to add the address and category boxes as well:

If anyone would like the code I used, e-mail me and I’ll send it to you: cchestnut [ at ] thedillonherald.com.

I get the same hang on “submit” that user Kirk Thompson has. It’s really bugging me because it looks so nice, but I’m not able to use it.

Hey I’ve built a Directory Website, but the Directory within the Website doesn’t work. as you can see here (http://bbn.net46.net/wordpress/?page_id=20) and it seems like the directory can be found via here http://bbn.net46.net/wordpress/?page_id=4 if you search as it’s a page not found page. Why aren’t they showing up in the Directory Search?

and here is one of the pages
    http://bbn.net46.net/wordpress/?wpbdm-directory=honolulu-community-church

And the Forum isn’t working and neither is the Contact Us button so I have to resort to posting in the comments. Please e-mail me and help, thanks! I know you guys are busy and I thank you for your timely response.
