Ohhh Point Eight!

BizDir_0_8We’re There!
Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions, support, and patience.

We are proud to release Business Directory for WordPress v0.8 Beta. It has been submitted to the gods at WordPress and should appear in your auto-update soon. In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown on what you will see, namely: Categories!

New in This Version

  1. Added Categories: you can now create your own categories, assign listings to categories, sign up into a category, and search by category.
  2. Fixed Bugs: We fixed a few issues that were troubling some of you, and found a few items that we improved under the hood.

This version is a little more stable, and sets the stage for future development of some nifty features that will let you take advantage of categories.

Upgrading Instructions For Current Users

  1. Back up your database.
  2. Seriously; while we are pretty confident in our stuff, we don’t want to be responsible for ruining yours. Back that thing up.
  3. Deactivate your current version of BizDir from within your Plugins Admin.
  4. Upload or Auto-update the new version 0.8 Beta.
  5. Reactivate BizDir.
  6. Add categories, assign categories, tell all your friends.
  7. Seriously; tell all your friends.

New users can simply add the new plugin as you normally would, though we still recommend the back up.

Here are some screen shots for you…

BizDir_2

^On your Business Directory page you will now have the ability to search for categories. This is a great feature for now, and sets up the ability in future versions to create separate pages in your blog for each category. Stay tuned…

BizDir_3

^In your Sign Up page you will notice a new field for Category. Your visitors are required to select a category before their submission will be accepted. This assures that all new sign ups are assigned to a category. You can name your own categories in the BizDir Admin panel.

BizDir_1

^In your BizDir admin panel, you can assign or change categories for your users before or after you approve them.

BizDir_4

^In the BizDir admin panel you now have the ability to add as many categories as you want. We create a category called ‘General’ for you, and assign all your existing listings into that category when you upgrade or install this new version. You have the ability to change the name of the General category, or can delete it. Note that your visitors will not be able to submit a listing unless there is a category for them to choose, so make sure you always have a category in there.

WARNING: Deleting a category will ALSO delete all the listings in that category. We warn you about this before we allow you to go through with it, but it is a good think to think about before you go deleting all your categories and flush your listings along with them. To avoid this, simply re-assign all the listings in a particular category to a new category. We’ll tell you how many listings are left in a category before you delete it, so you can be assured that you have cleared everyone out.

Did I mention backing up your database before doing any of this is a good idea?

:-)

The previous version was working fine on my site. I just AUTO-upgraded and that appeared to work fine. However, when I attempt to ADD a category, it allows me to enter the data and push the ADD button but then everything disappears. I can edit the existing GENERAL category but it does not work either. When I try to edit existing listings, the category dropdown responds “Loading… Please Wait” and does not change.

The plugin will no longer allow me to enter NEW listings either. The categories drop down is stuck at the “loading” function as above.

Give it some time. Mine took a minute to roll through.

I’ve got my business directory on the link http://www.asianhairandmakeup.com/asian-wedding-directory and i always get an ajax error on the directory page relating to categories and the same error in the admin panel when i try to assign existing listings to new categories.

the old version worked fine so i think it;s the categories that are causing the errors.

    can anyone help please?

I left it for hours and it never came up.

It must be something about my “Virtual Multiblog, 2.5″ setup. http://striderweb.com/nerdaphernalia/features/virtual-multiblog/
I have several WP blogs operating on the same WP installation. My technology site http://raywaldo.com is the site that is having trouble. My ministry site http://chiefshepherd.com works fine.
For now, I will just disable the plugin from my tech site.

I am experiencing the same issue as Ray. Internet explorer also shows an error on the page. This happens in IE 8, IE 7 and Firefox 3.5.2. I have not tried any other browsers. But this issue effectively breaks the whole application.

We are looking into these issues, as well as a security concern. We’ll put some elbow grease on this and see if we can’t come up with a quick solution. In the meantime, I will try to post the earlier version for those of you who have to revert.

Thank you for your interest & concern for your users!
Actually, it is working fine on my Chiefshepherd site (for churches).
In light of the previous issue, I have decided NOT to reinstall on the tech site. If I decide to add businesses to the directory, I will just add them to the primary directory and point to that listing from the other sites. It is actually a much better plan than trying to maintain two lists.

I am very interested in the premium version of this plugin that allows me to charge for directory spots. When is that likely to be ready?

    Thanks,

I am also having the issue with the category dropdown not displaying. It just keeps saying “Loading”.

  14. Posted September 13, 2009 at 12:11 pm | Permalink

This is a great plugin. Lean, useful and simple to implement.

The only problem for us (we want to use this a lot), is the mark up. We have duplicate ID’s and not enough control over the output at the moment. Ideally the lists would be atom compatible (or close enough). The use of classes on the actual items within a listing would allow us to position them wherever. Also the use of tables isn’t great from an accessibility point of view. A definition list within an overall ordered list would be great.

We’d be happy to help with the mark-up or contribute back to the project?

    Thanks, Mark.

Hi – any luck on these ajax errors getting fixed? I’d love to recommend the category version of the business directory to my small business blog owners but it needs to work first. Any help / repsonse would be appreciated Cary

would like to use listings in different categories on different pages. As it stands right now the plugin will only show all listings…it doesn’t define if they are in a specific category or not when displayed. I would like to display only one category at a time. help?

Hi, is there a way to add logos into the directory or embed them using HTML directly into the main info field?

  24. Posted December 24, 2009 at 2:37 pm | Permalink

I am trying to contact you through your contact form but it just keeps saying please wait and never goes through as far as I know. Here is my question:

Do you have an upgrade available for purchase that allows you to add subcategories, or the one you talk about in the FAQ that will allow you to publish more info when someone upgrades their listing? Thanks!

Please contact me, I am willing to donate for help but I don’t want to donate to an a plugin that has been abandoned that I can’t get to work for me.

I am getting an ajax error although the plugin appears to be working fine. Is there a way to disable this or fix it? I have searched around and it seems a lot of people are having this problem but no resolution has been offered. I did try running the older version but that didn’t change anything.

I also notice on your example directory that the phone number and website is showing but that isn’t happening on mine. Thanks!

so what must be done in here to solve the issue.
