New Version Uploaded: 0.7.1 Beta

071We just posted a new version of the Business Directory for WordPress plugin: Meet v0.7.1 Beta!

This new version fixes a bug in the installation process that was causing an error in the database creation process. The restulting functional error was that you could not save a Directory Listing to the database.

In this new version, we are correctly installing the database, and updating items upon activation.

The new version is available for download from the WordPress plugin directory (for newcomers, click in the upper right of this page) and via your plugin auto update in your WordPress plugin admin panel.

We are planning to jump from ‘beta’ to a ‘release’ version in our next revision. Functionally this does not mean much more than ‘we think we have the bugs worked out’. Our Big Kahuna pro version update is still in the mill, and we hope to have something out on the streets by Spring. …of 2009.

Thanks for being with us. Let us know how it goes.

I have been happily using Business Directory for WP for a while and updated to the latest version only to find that the short-code is not longer working and the directory no longer loads!

    Help!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi gang,

I love the look and apparent functionality of this plugin but am still having a problem getting the table created via the files. I wrote about this in the forum but thought I’d also comment here since your contact page suggested I use these two methods for support.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Thanks for the plugin it is a good match for a member directory for our organziation.

I have the new .7.1 beta on WP 2.7.1.

I am trying to update some directory entries. I view the list in admin, click on review and make a change and submit. The admin list page some times shows change is made and sometimes it is not. I am just changing the name field.

Any ideas why it does not update.

We’ve been looking for a “big kahuna” version of a Business/Yellowpage plugin for WordPress. Hoping to see logo upload and better search capabilities. Any chance this will be in your next release? If so…when should we expect the “spring” release? Can’t wait to see it!

I have been trying to get your plugin to work on WordPress MU but the table is not being created. Even when I create the table manually giving it the standard name “wp_biz_listings” or the MU name of “wp_1_biz_listings”, the plugin is not working. Need a resolution to get this to work and I’ve checked your forum but nothing there helps either.

DEFINITELY need category capability soon. Ready to hire a developer to make my own directory plugin with categories.

Body copy on listings is running off the right post margin -can you tell me how to fix this? Also, there’s no spacing between listings -they’re all single-spaced. Not very good looking. ;-(

I am also having the problem posted by David. I am running .7.1 beta and WP 2.7.1. When I attempt to edit the entries, the plugin indicates submitting and does nothing else.

In addition, in FireFox 3.0.8, when a listing is submitted via the form, a box pops up that indicates an ajax error, please reload the page and try again. However, the listing actually submits and the green message that indicates your listing is waiting for approval appears.

I would like to create business directory using WordPress, but prefer to have categories. Right now, I’m looking at 6 categories with the ability to have at least 2 levels of multiple subcategories. Is this possible? Let me know when. No hurry but this is a project I would like to add as a free service I offer. Thanks!

Categories would be nice, but what are my options for adding a custom field? I am creating a directory of organizations where I would like to add areas or countries of expertise.

We are indeed VERY interested in this plug-in – and need to have just two questions answered. Does it help to contribute to the SpareWare in order receive some assistance? If so, we’re very glad to contribute.

    Immediate issue:
    A) Getting Ajax error pop-up window when searching the directory, yet search works? Pop up is annoying, don’t know how to make it stop.

    Wish list:
    B) Would need to be able to sort members by category (type) of business

  20. Posted May 12, 2009 at 4:10 am | Permalink

good functionality plugin but need to add subcategory capability soon also after submitting a directory its better to send a notification mail to the admin.

  21. Posted May 13, 2009 at 11:57 am | Permalink

I am also having the problem posted by David and Jen (running .7.1 beta and WP 2.7.1). When I edit the entries, the plugin indicates submitting, but not always does the change.

Also there are some styling issues.

awesome work on the Business Directory guys

  28. Posted June 18, 2009 at 11:24 am | Permalink

I have installed your plug in on a customer’s site and so far love it. But, the top links in the control panel (shown in your instructions) are not there. I have recently upgraded their site to the new version of WP, so that maybe the issue.

Is it or am I missing something?

Also, I have an entire membership directory in an Excel file. Can I import that or do we need to add each one individually?

  30. Posted June 25, 2009 at 12:54 am | Permalink

Sherry, You can import straight into your database if you are familiar with messing with your database. Otherwise, you may have to add them one-by-one. This idea may make it into a future version, but not any time soon.

This is a good plugin. thank you.
What happens if there are too many links? Does it create pages?

  32. Posted June 25, 2009 at 11:43 am | Permalink

Yes, the plugin is designed to paginate after 30 entries. You can see an example of this at http://utahvalleybusinessblog.com.

    Cary,
Thanks for this plugin. I have spoke to you in the past and was wanting some help.

There is two issues I REALLY NEED. One is a feature where i can click each input line “to publish” or “not to publish” . for example if i want to have a phone number for my info, but i don’t want it published.

The second issue, spoke to you about on the phone. Is it possible to put a custom link button (of our choice design) on directory. Instead of it showing an ugly website text link showing.

Please if possible give me a call. I also sent a email and called last week.

  35. Posted July 5, 2009 at 4:20 pm | Permalink

Thanks for email. I want to apoligize for call the web link ugly. i wasn’t talking about bus dir. i was talking about the way it looks the way i use it.

but you mentioned that the suggestion of turning off publishing of certian blocks would word, thus i would not need to put a button there to hide it.

if you were to put a check box on plugin and say uncheck organization email. Will the user be able to click the business name and proceed to the page.

again, i really appreicate you help, and think the directory is support. if i ever get my website off the gound your the first that will be greatly thanked.

    Hi !

For a commercial project i need an extended yellow-pages plugin :
    - add images and galleries
    - normal and premium accounts
    - hooks to payment functions
    - user can manage more than one entry
    - some user can manage one entry
    and some small more.

I will pay for this improvements.
After the project you could take the extensions to your plugin, so that every user could se this functions.

If you are interested, please contact me.

    Regards
    Ralf

Great plugin. I’m just trying to set mine up so it looks like yours here: http://businessdirectory.squarecompass.com/example-directory/

Mine instead has no gaps between posts and is quite hard to read, all its all in black font. Is there a setting I’m missing out on which makes it display better? Mine is here: http://www.urbanculchie.com/wordpress/?page_id=148

If I could get it to look better it’d be great! :) Love the rest of it & looking forward to the premium version with paypal & photo upload :)

This is such a great Plugin for WordPress – if there was a pro version with more conceivability I wouldn’t have a problem with paying for a licence.
There seems to be nothing else out there at this quality and im sure there is a demand!

Have you any plans to develop this further?

    Cheers!,

I am having a similar problem as others with the install error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in business-directory.php on line 316.

We are attempting to run this under WP ver. 2.8.2.

Are there any known issues, workarounds, or advice for solving this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Loved this plugin, even though it did make me spend all of Sunday rewriting my site around it!

    Suggestions / Comments:-

    1) The plugin needs emails to ‘admin’ that someone is awaiting approval. This is especially important for people running multiple sites who won’t look at the admin page that often nor go into the Business Directory setting to see if anything is awaiting approval.

    2) Would probably be good to send a confirmation email to the person putting an entry on too – either at entry or approval time. That way (a) they know the entry has ‘made it’ or will know if someone else is pretending to be them (b) it’s an opportunity to plug the site they’ve registered for (c) other reasons I can’t really think of at the moment, but I know are there :-)

    2) Would be good to more easily change the layout of the directory. Or find where the layout is. Maybe it’s just me, but I did spend an awfully long time trying to work out where it was in the PHP code and how to change it a bit. [ Also broke it a couple of times, but fixed it again :-) ]

    3) Just for info, seems it works just as well as a POST as well as a PAGE [ My site originally used posts to generate the menu, so first thought was to add this as a post - tried successfully but decided to rewrite the site instead! :-) ]

There’s probably loads more little things, but as an off-the-shelf plugin I thought it was really really good. Now I’m off to look at my other sites, to see how it might work there :-)

Oh .. almost forgot … can I have two databases running on the same site? Or rather – as I’m sure I can – …. HOW do I have … etc. :-) )
