New Update: v0.8.3 ß (‘…for the love of umlauts’)

special charactersWe updated our Business Directory for WordPress plugin today. Those of you who expressed your need to add special characters; we have added them back in and you are now free to walk about the cabin.

You asked, we listened; thanks for all the feedback and friendly pleas.

You should be able to find it in your Admin control panel as an automatic upgrade option. If not, please follow the trail to the right and download from WordPress.

The details, in only slightly more detail:

  1. Compatability with all characters except “\” and multiple quotes (i.e. “”). You want to add special characters; have a ball.
  2. PHP Short Tags have been removed. This should help with some of the operational problems we have been hearing about. At least we hope so.
  3. Increased data handling validation, which we hope will clear up some of those random AJAX errors.
  4. We also took the time to make a few minor adjustments and tweaks while we were under the hood. We even fixed a spelling error for those of you who noticed.

Thanks to Jesse for getting it all worked out, and thanks to all those who kindly nudged us into submission; your special characters have been restored.

    Hi

Is there a way for each listing to have it’s own page?

    Thanks

Are you going to add a import csv option? Or any means of importing a list of data…?

Thanks for supporting this great plugin!

We are working on this, but will not have it any time soon. This is a feature of the Premium version we are working on.

We are working on a CSV option. I can’t tell you when we will have this ready, but we do realize it would be pretty cool to have.

I just discovered Biz Directory yesterday and jumped all over it. It was easy to install and has been working great.
    See http://cloudynews.com/cloud-computing-suppliers/

Of course, I want to do a lot more with it — such as displaying the other fields. Is there a way to display the address fields?

Also, page 2, etc don’t generate a unique URL so I guess they’re not generating pageviews (and ad views). Will they generate search engine results? It seems like these are dynamic pages and therefore, the search engines probably don’t have a way to store a unique URL for entries beyond the first listing page.

Downloaded v0.8.3 and installed yesterday 16 Oct 2009 on a new website, and get an Ajax error message when hitting submit upon entering a new listing and almost identical error selecting search in the directory: An ajax error occured while… adding your listing (or searching)… Please reload the page and try again..

The only error is the popup message. The submit and search each function properly despite the popup, so site visitors may be confused or annoyed with the faulty error message. They must click OK for it to go away, and then figure out it wasn’t really an error.

After searching and clicking the OK on the error popup window, the “View Entire Directory” link results in a similar Ajax error popup, too.

Any suggestions to resolve the popups being displayed when there’s no real error?

Otherwise, having tried your plugin for the first time, I am very pleased with functionality and ease of use.

Do you have any polans to include the TinyMCE editor to the submission form section? Truthfully…Iunderstand why you wouldn’t, but if that is the case..FOR SURE ADD IT TO THE ADMINISTRATION side. This way the administrator could clean up the submission to fit his style and layout.

    Hi guys,

I’ve asked this same question before on a previous post but I haven’t got an answer yet: is it possible to internationalize this plugin, so we can translate it to other languages, please? I’ve tried to do it myself and share with you, but I couldn’t make it work. If you do that, I can share the Brazilian Portuguese translation when it’s done and it’ll help your plugin become even more popular. It’s a very important feature, I’ve just translated the plugin directly in the code, which isn’t a good thing because now there’s this new version of it and it’s very hard to do it again.
Other thing is: I noticed the html markup isn’t very good because it uses tables and there aren’t too many styles to help us designers to customize it. I’d like to know if I could help you with that contributing with some changes to the html part.
Cheers and thanks for this plugin

I like this plugin, and I guess maybe I’ll update from 0.8.1, but I’ve made a bunch of customization to the output that I don’t look forward to doing again. Among my changes, are two column output with contact info including name and address in the left and description in the right, encryption of email addresses so they’re not as easily harvestable (using the method of dynamicdrive.com’s Email Riddler), and putting “maxlength” values into some of the fields on the input form. I knew virtually no javascript or php before diving into those changes, so its been a learning experience to say the least. The ajax search stuff still has me baffled in that javascript seems to not work after ajax runs a search. A little research on that leads me to think a “end request handler” is needed, but that’s beyond my abilities.

Even with this upgrade – still having the AJAX error (both in Firefox and IE Explorer) – is there any solution to this? I have several clients desperately needing to have this up and working.

The plug-in – in fact – WORKS FINE but each time you click on the SEARCH button, the AJAX error appears.

    bug in wordpress mu !

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user() in html/wp-includes/capabilities.php on line 920

someone answered me on a forum

capabilities.php isn’t the problem. Disable all of your plugins and re-enable them one by one. Something is calling a function in capabilities.php too early (before the user functions are initiated, which is after all the plugins are loaded (because they are pluggable).

It’s a great plugin – works exactly as I need it to – I just need to figure out the AJAX errors. Please help!

I noticed today that it won’t let me add a website that does not look like http://www.website.com when I try to enter http://www.subdomain.website.com or http://www.website.com/subdomain it tells me to find a real website. Is there a way to turn off this validation as I am checking all the websites before they are approved anyways?

Thanks and thanks again! I am a lay person who is very supportive of all the open source opportunities to have a comprehensive web presence. I know from experience how hard it is to get any kind of plugin directory. Joomla has one but the rest of the platform was too complex for me. Drupal hasn’t yet sorted it out either. So back I went to WordPress and was delighted to find your plugin.

I confess it did not work at first (partly operator error, partly issues resolved with upgrade) and I couldn’t get a response from you (I now know and understand why). So I abandoned my attempts and redirected the site to my Ning site. However when I went back two days ago I found your upgrade. All is well and I am back in business – with gusto.

I thank you for your efforts and I apologize on behalf of all who fail to see what you have done over what you haven’t done. They may not have had the experience I have with the cost and frustration of hiring a web designer for a customized application.

I hope you continue to be inspired and supported enough to continue your good work. I am making a donation today to express my appreciation.

I do have a question about the upgrade. Is it possible to have more than one directory on a WordPress site? Also in a blog like this is it possible to have a ‘follow’ button to automatically notify us when an answer has been posted?

Thanks again and have a super weekend! You deserve it!

Where can I edit a file to allow a user with level EDITOR to see and approve submitted listings from the dashboard. Right now only the ADMINISTRATOR can do this.

Also, does the program send out a email to notify when a new submission has been made.

I am having a problem, downloading and isntalling is fine, but when I add a test company to the directory, it only displays the name (with URL link attached) and the description, whereas on your example it displays the phone number and website.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Cheers guys, my donation is coming your way.

I’m having an interesting problem on Word Press 2.8.5 with the 0.8.3B. Basically, it appears that the html created by the business directory is creating mismatched quotation marks and apostrophes. For example, the following text is being rendered for a directory entry:

    Test

    TEST
    http://www.test.com

    test@earthlink.net
    (908)362-6570

For some reason the ‘ that would ordinarily be printed before the mailto is being converted to a “. Does anyone know why this is happening? The source code has an ‘ in that space.

    Thanks in advance.

I would like to create two seperate directories, one for businesses that I am charging for, and one for churches, that is free. Can this be done and if so, how? Love the plugin and can’t wait for the premium option.

  27. Posted November 6, 2009 at 5:44 pm | Permalink

You cannot have two instances of the Business Directory on your site at the same time. We are looking at ways to make this viable, but don’t have anything for you at this time.

First…. great plugin. Simple and straight forward. Looking forward to the Premium version.

Problem I am having is that the additional information (phone, email…) not showing up on the listing. The name is listed and if website is provided that is working. The description is also listing fine, but that is it. Not sure if I am missing a setting or having a conflict. I have changed themes to check if a conflict exist. Have also tried turning off other plugins. No luck so far. Anyone else having this problem?

    Thanks

I look forward to the premium version also, however, I want it to work bug free for the most part. Up to this point, there have been too many issues with this plugin. The free version is much appreciated and I understand there will be issues as this is an ongoing project and is free.

Please do your best to release a premium version that truly works well as there are many who are all too willing to pay a fair fee for this great plugin.

Is this because I am using \ in the url name?

Ben – I’m still having the same problem as Richard… It appears to be a problem in this line:
    $directory .= ““.@$l["company_email"].”“;

The apostrophe between the href= and mailto is being converted into a quotation mark and it’s throwing off the rendering… I’m not sure why this is happening.

Hello. Thanks for this plugin. I really like it. I just want to know if it is possible to include some little icons beside the listing. Like for telephone number, it hans an icon of a telephone and for e-mail, a mail icon and so on.

Also would it be possible as well to include or merge it with GD star ratings plugin?

Thanks will wait for your reply.

I’m having the same problem as Richard (URL’s containing a forward slash being flagged as invalid) – and would either like to be able to fix it, or simply remove the validation for it completely – any word on this? It definitely seems like a major bug.

Also, I’ve noticed that if you enter an Org email, but no Org URL – the email doesn’t show in the listing. Another Bug?

Any word on fixes for this otherwise great plug-in?

Hello! great plugin! Is there any news about Greek Support? (UTF-8), because the listing at the moment displays the greek characters as question marks (ie. ????, ???).

Also, the mass import from TXT, or CSV files could be great addition and check the possibility to add a small image or logo to our listings.

    Keep up the good work!

Hi Guys! Business Directory is a great plugin. Perfect, in fact. Alas, when I look at the Example Directory on your site I see things such as phone number, URL, email address, etc. all being displayed. But on my own site it only displays the title and the description. Could you provide me with the quickest path to resolution that you have available?

The Business Directory I am testing appears on the following page:

Has anyone found a solution to the AJAX errors being thrown? I’m getting them, and it looks like a lot of other people are. Also, what about showing up a business’ address on the result. This info is setup where a business is added and the address details respond to the search system — like if you have a business listed in Portland, Oregon, if you search “Portland” or “Oregon” it will come back in the results, but the content shown on the page doesn’t list any of that info. How do you get that to display? THANKS!

If these issues haven’t been fixed but the premium plugin that is in development has solutions to all these can you let me know approximately when it will be released? Thanks again for the great plugin, can’t wait to really start using it!
