Closing the Forum

thinkingmanAfter much thinking and deliberation, we have decided to close the forum on this site.

From now on, please make comments here in our blog.

We are doing this for a number of reasons, primarily to help reduce the amount of time and impact our feeble customer service effort requires of us.

We try to keep up with things, and make a somewhat regular effort to respond, reply, and even develop new versions. However the forum has become a breeding ground for negative comments regarding our inability to spend extra time on the site rather than an interactive forum for community support. Moderating the forum was taking an extra amount of time that we just don’t have, and obviously became a source of frustration for many of you. My apologies to any of you who are offended by this action; I simply cannot keep up and have determined that it is best not to allow a handful of complainers to dwell on this fact and ruin an otherwise great experience for the rest of us.

We started this open source project as an experiment to learn more about the open source community, to participate with what we think is a wonderful utility, and to give back to a community that has given us so much. We are overjoyed at the positive response we have received and thank you all for participating with us. We’ll keep working on better versions as we move forward.

At the same time, we have been flabbergasted at the mean and demanding tone of a few commenters. Gratefully we have only had a small handful of these experiences. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of a few important factors that dictate the time and effort we can spend on this project:

  1. It’s free. We’ll continue to provide a free version of this, but until it becomes a source of more than a handful of donations, we still have to focus on our revenue so that we can feed our children and go to an occasional movie.
  2. Hobby priority. We love working on this project, but because love doesn’t pay the bills, we have to prioritize this among other things that we love, but that don’t bring in revenue. This includes wives, children, cycling, trips to the aquarium and a few other pet projects. We have a lot going on.
  3. Simple Support Structure. We designed BizDir to be as simple as possible so that it wouldn’t require a huge support effort. We thrive on customer feedback and requests, and hope that what we provide will work for anyone interested, however we are not able to test for every possible scenario and often can’t afford the many hours it takes to make this work for your custom install of alien technology. We have designed this to work with most standard configurations; please go easy on us if it isn’t working for you, and especially if you are trying to wedge this into something that is ‘out of the ordinary’.

If you have feedback for us, we want to hear it. Please response to one of our blog postings, or send us a note in our feedback form.

As stated, we accept praise, advice, and even criticism, though we do appreciate you being nice about it.

Sincerely: Thank you.

You guys rock, I rarely do word press but a client wanted it and your plug in made it very easy. I was wondering if there is a way to add an extra field or even change the title of one on the directory page if thats easier.

Thanks again and this is the only directory plug in that worked right out of the box

I understand your reasoning for taking down the forum, it’s amazing how mad people get when their free stuff doesn’t work the way they expected it to. Perhaps they need more time to learn how to do it themselves. Anyways – positivity- thanks for all your work on this great plug-in. It has and continues to work awesome for me and the new update with categories is also awesome. Appreciate it. If you are still taking suggestions for improvement – the one thing that would make it better for me would be a form of communication when an entry is added to the directory so I don’t have to open it every time to see if someone was added. It could be either in the admin panel as a widget of some sort (highlighted light indicating awaiting entry or a list of awaiting entries) or it could send a simple email. I don’t know what would be more complicated.
Thanks again. I will definitely add to the Shareware button to ensure ou have time to work on this!

I am having the same issue. It says it is submitting, but IE is stating there is an error on the page. Nothing happens after I hit submit. I love this plugin and really want it to work.

[ Contact form doesn't appear to be working. Hangs on submit. ]

WP Business Directory looks like a nifty solution to a challenge I’ve been working on lately. I’m hoping y’all can answer a few questions before I take the plunge and try it out:

    1) Are the categories for the directory the same as the categories for blog posts or are they kept separate?

    2) Can a business be listed in multiple categories?

    3) Can the directory categories be listed on a page, perhaps with an indicator of number of entries?

    4) Is there any kind of import and/or export feature?

    5) What — if anything — is built into the plugin to make sure directory listings are indexed by search engines? (Are they treated as posts somehow?)

    Thanks much!

I’m building a community site using themes from Elegant Themes and installed Business Directory.

Everything was fine except the display of the Business Directory page…the Search by Category drop down seemed to have a styling conflict with the theme. The drop down box extended beyond the page content area, through the right column and beyond it. It was also colored the color of the theme color option selected in the theme.

    In “business-directory/business-directory.php” I found:

    ” “”.
    Search by Category: “.
    “”.
    $options.
    “”.
    “”.”

I edited the select id to = bizdir_categories and the display issue went away.

I haven’t checked functionality yet, but is there any reason this should create problems?

Apparently, the script was getting styled by the theme’s styling for it’s ‘categories’ bar.

I’m loving this plugin! I have a client using it though, who wants users to be able to rate each entry. I’ve scoured the plugin directory for ratings plugins, and there are a lot of them, but I can’t figure out how to get any of them to work with your plugin specifically.

Just wonder if you (or anyone) have any thoughts…

    Thanks for a great tool!

would like to separate categories into different posts. For example I have a restaurant category and would like to list only the listings under that category. Any ideas or help.
Also, When you click on the category under the search box it doesn’t filter those categories out, it still lists all listings in all categories.
    Thnx.

You fill in the form click submit and it say please wait but does nothing. Looks liek a great plugin, any ideas how to fix this? I tried with no other plugins active. I’m using the latest WP 2.8.6

I tried to use your contact form but it always says “Sending…” but then nothing seems to happen.

I’m thinking of using the directory plugin for our chamber of commerce site but would like to offer members upgrades for a bit of extra cash, eg logo in listind bold font, promote on front page etc. Is this something your premium version will offer? How much will it me and when are you releasing it?

I’ve just installed business directory plugin Version 0.8.4 Beta

    My WordPress version is 2.8.6

It activates ok but when I click on one of the Submit buttons for either the Add Business form or search form it does nothing. When I view the console in Firebug it says 404 page not found, I think it’s unable to locate requests.php.

I tried editing business-directory.php and changing the path for requests.php to an absolute path etc but this did not fix the problem.

I’ve also tried deactivating all plugins (apart from this plugin) and changing the theme to the default WP theme but still the same problem. As well trying with non-permalinks.

The website says the plugin works with 2.8.5 so I assume something new in 2.8.6 is causing this to happen?

I’ve been looking through the directory and I wonder if there’s any way to configure this plugin to search by State or City and also by Type of Organization or business)

It would be i think a better functionality as building a directory but not being able to sort it propertly isn’t really the best.

    Thanks!

Love the new plugin. I am developing a new website for Phoenix magazine, the leading monthly in Phoenix, Arizona. We would like to use your plug-in for our “Top Doctors,” “Top Dentists” and “Dining” directory categories. We have 3-4 things we’d like to iron out before we do, and I was hoping you would be available for some paid customization work. Please let me know when you have a chance, and nice work on the plug-in! –Adam

Your Business Directory plugin is great, thank you! I’m having one issue which I’m hoping is a quick fix — I’m unfortunately getting an AJAX error anytime I submit something on the BizDirectory — this means searching something on the front-end brings back the result properly but also an error pop-up which says “An ajax error occurred. Please reload the page and tray again.” I get this exact same error message if I select a category from the “Search By Category” drop-down — it brings back the proper results BUT it shows the error. Same goes for the front-end sign up form — the form’s data is submitted successfully but comes back with that same pop-up ajax error message. This goes for Safari and FF on a Mac, as well as IE and FF on a PC. Just to reiterate, everything is working fine as far as submitting data and bringing back the proper results, but it always brings back that ajax error message pop-up as well. Any quick fixes to this?

    Hi there:
I am putting together a website (free) for the Muskoka Multi-Cultural Association. When we upload the coding for the registration form – it uses the word ‘organization’ rather than business. I am asking immigrant businesses from my region to register and use the site as a way of highlighting the # and various businesses in our rural region. I would appreciate any help you can give. Also, would be willing to donate more than the $5.00 requested for a site that works easily for us . :) Thanks for all your hard work Phyllis

    Hi Guys,

This plugin looks really nice. I noticed you have plans for a version which would allow paid links. Maybe you could call it “pro” and charge like $37 for one site and $99 for an unlimited developer license? That way we could get the version we want and you could get paid. Thanks.

P.S. you have my email on this comment, would you please ping me if/when you do this? Thanks.

    Hi
I just found your directory plugin on the wordpress.org list and was browsing your site to learn more.

As a moderator and administrator of several forums I understand the frustration that a few complainers can cause.

Forums can be a great way to push information and knowledge to members. Sorry to hear you have decided to discontinue yours. I get the time issues.

I have a question.. is it possible to add a photo or graphic to a directory listing?

    Hi !
I’m having some trouble with your plugin, if I enter more than 3 records in any category, if I do then in the category search, the records of the correspondent category are not shown. Another thing, I have confirmed all 24 records and only 20 appear on the first page, and when I click to go to the second page says I’ve got no more records

    I hope you help me
