Changing Your Directory Name

What’s in a name? Apparently a lot. Good thing we planned for this…

I have received a handful of questions about how to change your Business Directory Name. The answer is ‘Yes’, you can change the name of your Directory.

We have posted information on how to do this in our documentation, however I will quickly review the process here, too…

We work with ‘shortcode’, which is the short piece of code that you put on your page to display the Directory on your site.

Normally, the shortcode for the Display page looks like this:

To rename your Business Directory, all you need to do is add a little text to the code, like this:

In the above example, the colored part (blue/red) needs to be added in order to change your Business Directory name. Specifically, the RED part is your new name. In this example, you would be changing the name to ‘Cool Directory‘. Easy as pie.

You can also change the width of your Business Directory. I don’t recommend changing the width unless you are an experienced coder because you will likely end up with some text wrapping or CSS problems to deal with. Regardless, if you want to change the width of your Business Directory, you would change the shortcode to look like this:

In the example above, you are changing the width to ’90 percent of your page width’, and you are also changing the name of your Directory to ‘Cool Directory’. You can change the width without changing the name by simply eliminating ‘name=”Cool Directory” ‘ in this example.

If you have any questions or feedback about this process, please let us know in the comments for this post.

    Hi!

First of all, I would to thank you for this excellent plugin.

I have some suggestions to improve it:

    - Generate an individual page for every directory item. It would be a page with all the data. And an extra feature: generate an integrated google maps window with the business address.

    - To include the possibility of any king of sort. I think in a commercial directory with free or paying inclusions.

    - Add categories or same sort of listings: by province, by tags…

    Thanks again.

    Thanks Javier!

I appreciate your great ideas. We have discussed similar ideas and hope to be able to incorporate as many as we can.

Most recently we have been discussing the addition of categories. We are working out the best way to incorporate categories within the WordPress framework and hope to have an initial implementation in our next major release.

For now we are working on a bug that is causing trouble in the Add Form. We hope to have a solution very soon.

I agree with Javier that a category addition would be extremely useful particularly in the case of our Blogs Unlimited site. Has your v 0.6.1 fixed the ie7 bug? Waiting patiently for the category feature added so we can use it.

Can there be more than one business directory on a site, e.g. a separate directory for under 12′s, 13-19′s and over 20′s?

    thanks,
    Debbie
